Disc Dog Foundation Skills
Content: This course will focus on teaching you and your canine partner the foundations of the sport of disc dog, which may include: different disc grips and releases, proper throwing technique, drive building, safety considerations for humans and canines, canine foundations (rollers, takes, retrieves, drops), set up moves, freestyle tricks and sequence/routine building, rules of the game, etc. Each team will get some individualized training from the instructor based upon their skill level.
Your dog does not need to know how to catch airborne discs in order to attend. There are a variety of techniques to teach your dog to catch, so don’t despair. Your dog, however, must be interested in playing with and chasing toys.
Prerequisites: Dogs must be age-appropriately vaccinated; Dogs must be healthy including being free from internal and external parasites (including fleas, ticks, worms, etc); Dog & Handler must have completed Intermediate Dog & Handler.
Schedule: Classes meet once a week for 6 consecutive weeks on the same day of the week and at the same time all 6 weeks. The length of each class is 45 minutes.
Week 1 of Class: The first week of class is for HUMANS ONLY - NO DOGS.
Equipment Requirement: Each team needs a minimum of 5 dog safe discs (10 is better). Hard plastic discs sold by most pet stores and children's departments are unsafe and can shatter and injure your dog. An economical way to purchase discs is to buy blems (which are misprinted discs that have no flaws that affect their flight characteristics and are allowed in competition). Visit Hero Disc USA or Hyperflite to order discs. Please order in advance of the start of class to allow for shipping time. Also, please bring a travel crate/kennel (if you have one), so the dogs can rest between runs, a sheet or cover for the crate, and a chew to keep your dog occupied between runs.
Small Dogs: If you have a small dog, please contact us for information regarding disc options for your dog.
